Ontario will be the fourth province in Canada to enact a law like this, following Quebec, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland. The use of a cell phone with a hands-free device will still be allowed, so your office-on-the-go or your important calls to grandma won't have to stop.
What this means then, is that any texting, emailing, and phone calls while driving will soon be against the law. Oh, and forget about scrolling through your iPod or entering a destination on your GPS while on the go.
The fine for violating this new law could cost you as much as $500 but officers won't start issuing fines until February. No demerit points will be issued, unless you're distracted driving leads to careless driving.
Police are hoping that the impact of those potential charges will deter people from using their hand-held devices while driving at all, which hopefully will lead to less accidents as a result of less overall distraction while driving.
