The car will be built at the GM plant in Oshawa, Ontario, which is already pumping out new Camaros as fast as they can, but will add another variant to the assembly line.
Motor Trend reports that the design has been finalized and signed off on, but the final engineering is still being completed as GM smooths out the little wrinkles caused by that minor glitch they experienced recently. Out of that though, GM has apparently been able to reduce labour costs with the CAW enough to be able to make a case to produce the Z28. Who says bankruptcy is a bad thing?
The new Z28 will use the LSA engine that has seen use in the recently-introduced Cadillac CTS-V (and hopefully CTS-V Sportwagon). The LSA is a version of the 6.2 litre LS9 that plays king-of-the-hill in the Corvette ZR1, but in this application, it features a smaller supercharger, thus producing a meager 556 horsepower (as compared to the LS9's 638) and 551 lb/ft of torque.
With the program back in GO mode, things will start moving along now, but the car is not expected in showrooms until late 2011. The Z28 is expected to be priced competitively with the new Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, and it should make for some extremely interesting (and smoke-filled) comparison tests. If current Camaro sales are any indication, you might want to put in your order now if you want to get your hands on one of these when they finally go on sale.
